The new city hall is housed in this neo-Gothic building
built between 1867 and 1908 with flowers on the balconies and the gargoyles
reaching over the roof lines. Its tower reaches 260 feet into the air.
An gathering of hundreds of people (=tourists) takes place every day around
11 am and 5 pm in front of the Glockenspiel to see the colorful
dressed figurines move.
The donor of the Glockenspiel, the fourth largest in Europe,
was Consul Rosipal. On the lower of the two platforms the Schäfflertanz
is shown, which is performed publicly every seven years in remembrance of
the plague in Munich. The scene in the upper floor is a reminder of the
two weeks of feasting to celebrate the wedding of Duke Wilhelm V. to Renata
of Lorrain in 1568. |
